The Post Office Seeks To Prevent Use Of “Post-Office.Co.Uk”

The Post Office has commenced litigation against Giant Games Limited, owners of the domain name "post-office.co.uk", alleging trade mark infringement and cybersquatting.

Giant Games, a domain name registration company has retained e-commerce legal specialist Simon Halberstam of Sprecher Grier Halberstam solicitors who have instructed expert counsel Jonathan D.C. Turner to defend it.

Giant Games contend that the term "post office" is generic and is widely used to refer to internet chatrooms, customer feedback on the internet, general email services, and systems including POP-3, the acronym which stands for Post Office Protocol version 3.

Giant Games accuses The Post Office of abusing its monopoly in postal services in the UK and it is asking that the trade marks owned by The Post Office for "The Post Office" be revoked on the basis that it they are purely descriptive.
